Chicago Symphony Orchestra
(Orchestras) Biography:
Now in its second century, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra enjoys an enviable position in the music world. The Orchestra’s 114-year history began in 1891 under Theodore Thomas who served as music director for thirteen years until his death in 1905 - just three weeks after the dedication of Orchestra Hall, the Chicago Orchestra’s permanent home. Thomas’ successors were Frederick Stock (1905 - 1942), Désiré Defauw (1943 - 1947), Artur Rodzinski (1947 - 1948), Rafael Kubelík (1950 - 1953), Fritz Reiner (1953 - 1963), Jean Martinon (1963 - 1968), Sir Georg Solti (1969 - 1991) and Daniel Barenboim (1991 – 2006). Bernard Haitink now holds the position of Principal Conductor. Three conductors have held the title of principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez who is now Conductor Emeritus. Solti’s arrival in Chicago launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time. He led the Orchestra’s first international tour in 1971 and subsequent tours worldwide have reinforced its reputation as one of the world’s finest musical ensembles. Barenboim’s music directorship has been distinguished by the opening of Chicago’s new Symphony Center in 1997, nineteen international tours, and an ongoing series of composer perspectives woven into the Orchestra’s subscription series. His tenure has also been marked by a dedication to the next generation of orchestral musicians through his continued advocacy of the Chicago Civic Orchestra program. Barenboim and the Orchestra returned from a triumphant seven-city, eleven concert European tour in March/April 2005. Throughout the CSO’s history, recordings have been an important part of the Orchestra’s activities and since 1916 it has amassed a discography numbering more than 900.
