Poul Elming
(Tenors)
Biography:

Poul Elming was born in Aalborg, Denmark, and studied as a baritone at the Conservatoires in Aalborg and Aarhus.

He became a member of the Jutland Opera in Aarhus from 1979 for whom he sang many leading baritone roles. In 1984 he was engaged at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen where his baritone roles included The Count (Marriage of Figaro), Eugene Onegin, Germont, Posa, and Malatesta. He also studied with Susanne Eken at the Conservatory in Copenhagen and Professor Oren Brown at the Juilliard School in New York and these studies led to the change in his voice from baritone to tenor, and in the spring of 1989 he made his debut as a tenor at the Royal Opera in the role of Parsifal..

In 1990 Poul Elming made a highly successful debut at the Bayreuth Festival singing Siegmund (Die Walküre),and returned for many years singing Siegmund (now released on CD and video by Teldec) and in the title role of Parsifal. Since then he has become a leading exponent of these roles and has sung them worldwide, including at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Met in New York, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna State Opera, Hannover, Opéra National de Paris, Amsterdam, Dresden, Chicago, San Francisco, in concert in Munich, and in Birmingham with Sir Simon Rattle. In 1994 he sang Max (Der Freischütz) for the first time, at the Madrid Opera a role he has repeated in Copenhagen, Berlin and Hamburg. Other roles in recent seasons have included the title role in Idomeneo in a new production in Copenhagen.

He has worked with the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Christoph von Dohnanyi (for whom he recorded Siegmund in Die Walküre with the Cleveland Orchestra for Decca), Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Simon Rattle and James Levine.

Engagements in recent seasons have included the world premiere of Poul Ruders’ A Handmaid’s Tale in Copenhagen (recently released on CD), Parsifal conducted by Sir Simon Rattle at the Proms in London, and in Adelaide (the first ever complete staging in Australia) and Japan. He has recently sung his first Loge (Das Rheingold) in the Royal Opera’s new production in Copenhagen.

Poul Elming is an active concert and recital singer and concert commitments include appearances in his native Denmark, as well as Great Britain, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, and Japan.
