Kathryn Harries
(Sopranos)
Biography:

Kathryn Harries studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music with Constance Shacklock and Flora Nielsen.

She made her opera debut as Leonore/Fidelio for Welsh National Opera in 1983 since when her many roles have included Kundry, Sieglinde, Gutrune, Brangäne, Kostelnicka, Emilia Marty, Didon/The Trojans, Marie/Wozzeck, Carmen, Judith/Bluebeard’s Castle, Donna Elvira, and Countess Geschwitz/Lulu. She has appeared with all the UK companies including Covent Garden, ENO and Glyndebourne and in major houses throughout the USA (including the Met, Chicago and San Francisco) and Europe.

Recent engagements have included performances of Kostelnicka in Glyndebourne, Chicago, San Francisco, Genova and Bilbao, two world premieres: David Sawer’s From Morning to Midnight and Valerie von Kant/The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant for English National Opera, and William Bolcom’s A Wedding for the Lyric Opera of Chicago; Les Dialogues des Carmelites in Amsterdam and Hamburg, the title role in Herodiade in Liege, Kostelnicka and Kabanicha in Lyon, and Mrs Sedley/Peter Grimes in Salzburg with Sir Simon Rattle.

In 2009 Kathryn Harries became Director of the National Opera Studio in London.
