Markus Stenz

“Markus Stenz is going to be good for the Hallé…his sense of discovery as he makes music is palpable…his technical command and rapport with the players produced playing of energy and precision.” Manchester Evening News, October 2009 Markus Stenz is the General Music Director of the City of Cologne and Gürzenich-Kapellmeister and Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra. His previous positions have included those of Music Director of the Montepulciano Festival (1989 - 1995) Principal Conductor of London Sinfonietta (1994 - 1998) and Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (1998 – 2004) He appears in his native Germany with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Ensemble Modern, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Opera engagements have included collaborations with Stuttgart Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Hamburg Opera and Frankfurt Opera. Appearances further afield have included La Fenice in Venice, La Scala Milan, Brussels Opera, Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English National Opera and the Salzburg Festival. Markus Stenz’s many recordings have included Kurt Weill’s Der Silbersee for BMG. Together with the Gurzenich Orchestra he has embarked upon recording the complete Mahler symphonies. Highlights for the 09/10 season include appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Katya Kabanova for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and a Ring Cycle for Cologne Opera House, which will then tour to China.
