Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy
(Baritones & Basses)
Biography:

Born in Norway Thorbjørn Gulbrandsøy graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London where he studied with Glenville Hargreaves.

As a student he sang the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Anthenor in Rameau’s Dardanus and The Night Watchman in Judith Weir’s A Night at the Chinese Opera.

In his native Norway Thorbjørn has appeared with the Norwegian National Opera and at the Bergen Festival as well as with all the Norwegian Symphony Orchestras including the Oslo Philharmonic and Bergen Symphony Orchestra. His Papageno in the 2004 Bergen Festival production of The Magic Flute received much critical acclaim. His other roles in Norway have included Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro and Masetto in Don Giovanni. He recently sang Eugene Onegin for Bergen Opera with enormous success.

In 2008 Thorbjørn sang in the Glyndebourne Festival production of St Matthew Passion and later that year scored a huge success as Pelléas in Independent Opera’s production of Pelléas et Mélisande at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. Operatic highlights of the 2009/2010 season included Schaunard in La Bohème for Opera North and Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Térésias at the Grand Teatre del Liceu.

Thorbjørn has a passion for the Lied repertoire and in 2003 won the Nordic Pentti Koskimies Lied Competition.

Amongst the distinguished conductors with whom he has already performed are Andrew Litton, André Previn, Pierre-André Valade, Ilan Volkov and Sir David Willcocks.

During the 2010/11 season he will appear in La Boheme, again as Schaunard, for Den Nye Opera in Bergen and in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex as Le Massager for Den Nye Opera.
