Erik Nielsen
(Conductors) Biography:
Erik Nielsen took up the position of Kapellmeister of the Frankfurt Opera from the beginning of the 2008/9 season. He studied as a double-major in oboe and harp at the Juilliard School New York, before studying conducting at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Prior to moving to Frankfurt he played harp in the Berlin Philharmonic as a member of its Orchester-Akademie. In 2009 Erik Nielsen was awarded a $25,000 Fellowship by the US Solti Foundation to assist in the development of his career His recent repertoire in Frankfurt includes Lohengrin, Le nozze di Figaro, La clemenza di Tito, Entführung aus dem Serail, Tosca, Eötvös's Angels in America,and Curlew River. In 2005/6 Nielsen assisted Christoph Eschenbach on The Ring at the Chatelet in Paris, and 2008 was invited by James Levine to conduct Mahagonny in Tanglewood. He assisted Maestro Levine in Tanglewood in 2007 and in both years also conduced concerts there. InJanuary 2009 he made his UK debut conducting The Magic Flute for English National Opera Erik Nielsen has extensive experience in the field of contemporary music, recent projects including concerts with the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt and Brussels, and contemporary programmes woith the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. In his native USA, engagements have included the New World Symphony, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. In 2009/10 Erik Nielsen will conduct Ariadne auf Naxos for the Lyric Opera of Boston and a new production of Karl Amadeus Hartmann's Simplicius Simplicissimus in Frankfurt and make his UK concert debut with the Northern Sinfoina. In December 2010 Erik Nielsen will make his Met debut in New York with The Magic Flute and his Dresden debut at the Semper Oper with Henze's new stage work Gisela. As an orchestral musician, Erik Nielsen has enjoyed the invaluable experience of working under conductors such as Abbado, Barenboim, Conlon, Dutoit, Janssons, Levine, Maazel, Mackerras, Masur, Nagano, Previn, Rattle, Salonen, Slatkin, Tilson Thomas and Zinman.Photo Credit: Barbara Klemm This biography is for website use only.
